Agnes Cooper

Information on Agnes Cooper in an email to Graham Hawker from Rosemary Grant:
"I am related through Agnes Cooper, daughter of Samuel Cooper and Charlotte Cox.  She
married my great grandfather Thomas Burgess in 1856 with whom she had eight children. After
his death in 1869, she remarried Edward Williamson, and had two more."

William Hawker

Email received by Graham Hawker 3 July 2006 states:

Emma King

http://www.thornburymuseum.org.uk/archive/news_31.htm states:
<<
“I believe that Thomas Day Burroughs married Hannah Hawker prior to travelling to Melbourne in 1853. I have not been able to find a record of their marriage in “Scribes Alcove” however I have found Hannah's Baptism Record as 13 June 1832 at Rockhampton. Thomas Day's baptism is also recorded at Rockhampton.”
After further investigation it has now been proven that Thomas Day Burroughs did indeed marry Hannah Hawker, of Oldbury on Severn, in Bristol in 1852. Their first daughter, Helena, was born in 1853, the same year that Thomas Day Burroughs sailed to Australia to seek his fortune. It was 5 years later that Hannah and her daughter, Helena, made the trip to Victoria, Australia aboard the ship the “William Jackson” to join Thomas. Thomas and Hannah Burroughs went on to have 4 more children, all boys including one set of twins. Hannah died in Melbourne in 1898 and Thomas died in 1901.
Hannah Hawker was the first child of Thomas Hawker and his wife Emma (nee King) of Oldbury on Severn. Thomas’s brother, John Hawker, married Emma’s sister, Priscilla King. Thomas and John Hawker were sons of John and Mary (nee Sheppard) Hawker and Emma and Priscilla King were daughters of Richard and Elizabeth King of Shepperdine.>>

William Hawker

Emigrated to Australia on the "Blenheim" arriving on 5 July 1855

John Hawker

Thanks to the help of listers last week, I think I might possibly have found
an identity for my ancestor Frederick HAWKER, who married Maria ROBINSON in
1854 in Ross on Wye and gave his age as 21, father's name John, Ag. Lab..
On 23 March 2004 Rebecca Davies wrote in the GLOUCESTER mailing list on Rootsweb:
Thanks to the help of listers last week, I think I might possibly have found

1854 in Ross on Wye and gave his age as 21, father's name John, Ag. Lab..
Following the birth of two daughters, he seems to have disappeared off the
scene.
I now have the following from the 1861 GLS census:

The PRO Ref is: RG9/1748 Folio 105 Sch 25
Place Tything of Oldbury in Parish of Thornbury.

John HAWKER Head M 54 Mariner born GLS Thornbury
Priscilla HAWKER Wife M 53 Butterseller? born GLS Thornbury
Frederick K HAWKER Son M 23 Ag Lab born GLS Thornbury
Priscilla K HAWKER Dau U 18 Dressmaker born GLS Thornbury
James K HAWKER Son U 16 - born GLS Thornbury
Jane K HAWKER Dau - 9 Scholar born GLS Thornbury

There is, I'm reliably informed, no doubt that Frederick's status is given
as married here (also, a much later marriage for the same person gives his
status as "widower"). The first marriage I found on the GRO when I checked
backwards from 1861 was the 1854 Ross marriage, but the Oldbury Frederick
would have been only 17 and a half then (he was born March 1837). I'm
inclined to think, though, that this could indeed well be one and the same
person, and that he simply raised his age to get around having to have
parental consent for the marriage which, after all, was a reasonable
distance from his family's home. The margin of difference between 17.5 and
21 is not beyond the bounds of credibility.
