8Newspaper Obituary, Walsall Observer and South Staffordshire Chronicle, Saturday 23/JAN/1926. "DEATH OF MR. T. HAWKER. A Successful Business Career of Over Forty Years in Walsall HIS PUBLIC WORK After an illness of about five weeks’ duration, Mr. Thomas Hawker, one of Walsall’s best-known tradesmen and an active and ardent support of various local organisations, passed away at his residence, Park Road, Great Barr, on Tuesday, in his 67th year. A native of Tewkesbury, Mr. Hawker served his apprenticeship in the bakery trade at Brierley Hill, and after spending a short time in Birmingham, he came to Walsall in 1879, to work for his brother-in-law, Mr. Ellis, of Caldmore. About a year later, he started on his own account in Green Lane, and there he built up a flourishing business as a grocer and baker and wine and spirit merchant. It was largely by his own efforts that he succeeded, and it was not until he had controlled its affairs for over 40 years that he began to take things somewhat easier, when the business was formed into a limited liability company, as Messrs. T. hawker and Sons, a few years ago. He filled the position of chairman, however, up the time of his death and continued to be closely associated with the undertaking, although during the last year or two he was seriously troubled by failing eyesight, which also caused him to restrict his activities in other directions. A strong Unionist in politics, Mr. Hawker was prominently identified with that party in the town for a long period, and he was chairman of the old club in Bradford Street during the important period when the seat was captured from the Liberals by the present Sir Richard Cooper, Bart, who defeated Major Dunne in 1910. To the Master Bakers Association, Mr. Hawker rendered valuable service, which was recognised by the presentation to him of an illuminated address and other gifts in 1923, as president and secretary for about thirty years; and another body with which his name will for long be closely associated in the Walsall and district Licensed Victuallers Association, of which he was president for a number of years. He retired from that office in 1924, and a rather melancholy circumstance connected with his death is that the members of the association had arranged to make a presentation to him on Wednesday evening. A year or two before the war, Mr. Hawker succeeded Mr. R. B. Sutton as the chairman of the Walsall floral and Horticultural Society, and he resumed that office in 1919 and retained it for another two or three years’ and for six years, prior to 1904, he was the president of the Walsall Harmonic Society. Personally, Mr. Hawker was an affable and genial gentleman, who was held in high esteem, and he will be much missed by a large circle of friends. He had ten sons and daughters, all of whom survive him. In March, 1901, Mr. Hawker contested a municipal by-election in the Birchills ward, but he was unsuccessful, Mr. E. Egan being returned by 1,052 to 552. The Funeral The late Mr. Hawker was laid to rest in Ryecroft Cemetery yesterday afternoon. At the service, which was conducted in St Peter’s Church by the Rev. Preb. C. E. McCreery, the hymn, “Rock of Ages,” was sung, The mourners were: Messrs. Reg, George, William, Cecil, James and Charlie Hawker (sons) Mrs. Hall and Miss Alice Hawker (daughters) Mr. H. Wint and Mr. J. Hall (sons-in-law), Mrs Matthews, Tewkesbury (niece) and Mr. G. Darke Gloucester (nephew) and Gladys, Annie, and Tommy Hawker (grandchildren). Six old employees, who acted as bearers, were Messrs. A. Hedges, J. Veale, E. Bridgman, F. Hewlett, J. Bytheway, and F. Hill. The master Bakers’ Association was represented by Messrs. J. Coole (president) J.R. Ditchfield (vice-president) F. W. Griffin (hon. Treasurer) and Mr. J. C. Chattin (hon. secretary). Representing the Walsall and District Licensed Victuallers’ Association were Messrs. P. B. Cooke (president) A. Medlam (vice-president) , B. Baggott (treasurer) F. Paddock (senior auditor) G.E Parry and M. F. Harrison (secretary), Councillor E. Evans, solicitor to the family, was also present and Mr. A. Turner represented the Walsall Unionist Association, and Mr. W. A. Blackburn the Walsall Unionist Club. There were many harps among the numerous floral tributes, which included wreaths from the Master Bakers’ Association, the Walsall Unionist club, the Walsall Harmonic Society, the Licensed Victuallers’ Association, and the employees." 2Internet, http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/a/r/Ellen-R-Barrick/index.html. "Welcome to the Barrick - Rush Family Tree Home Page!! My name is Ellen Anne Rush Barrick and I have just started my family tree search this summer. It is proving to be challenging, addictive and fun! My search on my husband's family begins with the family of John Barrick, born in Walsall, England in 1852; he died in Walsall in 1908. He married Martha Yates in England. Their son was Benjamin Thomas born in 1880 in Walsall, England and died in Lynbrook, Long Island, NY in 1954. Benjamin married Lillian Blanche Hawker born in Walsall, England in 1887 and dying in 1954 in Lynbrook, Long Island, NY. Their two children were George Thomas Hawker born in 1914 in NY and Mildred Allice born in 1922 in NY. George is my husband Thomas' father. My search also includes the family of Enoch (aka Enos) B. Rush born in Mead County, KY in 1839. He married Manerva Bennett, born in 1847 in Muehlenberg County, KY. They were married January 8, 1874 in Owensboro, KY. They had the following children: Lydia Estella, Edwin B., James Addison, Susan, Ina May, Charles Samuel, John Bennett, Eugene Guy. Eugene was my grandfather, born in 1889 in Glenville, KY and married Hadia Hornbaker, born in 1892 in Owensboro, KY. Their children were: Charles Edward; Stella Mae (died in infancy); Eugene Guy. Charles is my father and married Bessie Lucille Davis, my mother. Her father was Casper (Cass) Franklin Davis, born in 1879 in Fayette County, GA and he married Molly Murphy born in 1880 in Fayette County, GA. They were married in 1907. Casper's mother was Catherine Parrott. Molly's parents were William Taylor Murphy born in approx.1850 and Charlotte Mitchell born in1847 in GA. I would appreciate any information you might have on any of these families and I will gladly share my information in return." ellibear@preferred.com.
