Toma del Agua - Cañada de la Mora

Route description

This path celebrates the great value of water. Following the banks of the Guadalmina River you will arrive at a place known as "la Toma del Agua". With this water pools are filled, gardens and orchards are irrigated; it grows forests and creates pools of crystalline waters in which the otters play at sunset. On your way to this lost corner you will find remains of old furnaces of miera and lots of nature.

The trail starts near the Guadalmina dam, which is located a few minutes from the town. You must cross three small valleys (cañadas) before reaching your destination: the Cañada de los Linillos, the Laguna and the Cañada de la Mora.

The starting point is at the fence of the Cortijo de La Algaida, where you take the path to the cañada of La Higuera, which is parallel to the course of the Guadalmina River. It climbs a slope and crosses the stream of Tejarejo. Passing the house of the estate manager and a little further on through the forest nursery of the farm, you come to a three-way junction from which you can see the Tower of Tramores.

One of the roads goes down to the river into the area surrounded by eucalyptus, the Vega del Jarillo. If you cross the river, the road climbs and connects with the track that leads to the Ronda highway. If you take the path on the left, you go up to the house.

Take the path in the middle, which is parallel to the course of the river. The road continues until you reach a new junction (usually with a chain to prevent the passage of vehicles). On the right there is a small path that goes down to the river and an excellent place for a dip in summer.

Continue along the path, always parallel to the river, and cross a first cañada where the "Arroyo de los linillos" passes and following the route we will reach a second cañada where two streams join the "cañada of the fig tree" and the "cañada of the blackberry".

Finally, the path continues until you reach the "vega del ragual", where the source of the Toma del Agua of the Guadalmina River is located. In this place, the water that supplies Benahavís is collected. The construction was carried out in the 90s. From here, the Guadalmina River always has water even in the middle of summer due to multiple sources within its channel.
