To reach the starting point, Puerto Martinez, take the MA-5401 road from Casarabonela towards Ardales-El Burgo.
Puerto Martinez has an altitude of 740 meters above sea level and this was important in the past. The ancient Roman road that connected Malaga with Ronda passed through here.
The path starts from this point and takes you into a replanted forest of carrasco pine and black pine. You can also find holm oaks and olive trees that were part of the original forest.
Cross the pine forest, just under 1 kilometer and take a turn to the left.
On the right side of the path you will see the remains of an old calera, a circular hole about 2 meters in diameter and between 3 and 4 meters deep.
From here the ascent becomes more pronounced but the views towards the Guadalhorce Valley also become more spectacular. You can see Pizarra, Cártama and Alhaurín el Grande and part of Carratraca. Note the reddish color of the Sierra de la Robla, formed by peridotite rock.
The climb continues to the peak of Alcaparaín, known as Pico el Grajo or Pico Valdivia. It belongs to the Sierra de las Nieves Biosphere Reserve and has an altitude of 1,293 meters.
From this point, you have a bird's eye view of the natural landscape of the Gaitanes Gorge, with the Sierra del Huma and the Guadalhorce reservoir complex; the Natural Reserve of the Fuente de Piedra lagoon, the Torcal de Antequera Natural Park and the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park.
