1 April 2023 Checking to see the state of the walk to the River Ojén
The path to the end of the exercise trail is in bad condition. Very slippery with loose stones.
The walk along the river, where the exercise route was, is now totally blocked with thorns and tree branches.

16 April 2022 Great circular walk from the El Soto restaurant
Quite a tough walk, lots of hills and rough ground in places but a good variety of views and surroundings.
A nice cool beer at the El Soto restaurant at the end should restore your spirits.

12 July 2020 Further exploration of the River Ojén
We decided to explore a little further along the River Ojén. This path is less well used but the river here is beautiful.
We reached a point where to proced further we would need to wade in the river itself, so that remains for our next visit.

11 July 2020 The River Ojén
Today we went for a walk along the River Ojén. The old exercise signs are still there but now many are almost illegible. It is a pity because it is an excellent way of combining keep-fit with enjoying these beautiful natural sutroundings.
Maybe we should all write to Mijas Town Hall asking for the signs to be renewed.

7 July 2020 Los Monjes
A walk to Los Monjes and beyond. A very nice walk starting up the hill behind the bus station in Marbella. Lots of shade for a hot sunny day and the continual sound of running water from the Arroyo de Guadalpin.

9 June 2019 The White Route in the Sierra de Mijas
Today I did the (easy) White Route, a 2.5kms walk, fairly steep in places but with fantastic views of the coast.
There was a strange white building that I have since discovered is the Cruz de la Misión but the cross seems to have disappeared.
Formerly it was a point of pilgrimage. There was a cross inside and people brought flowers and put pictures of saints.
Now it has been converted into a kind of machine room, there is equipment for the radio antennas that are higher up.

20 May 2019 The Hiking Routes in the Sierra de Mijas
Mijas Town Hall signposted a number of interesting and scenic routes in the Sierra de Mijas, the mountains behind Mijas town.
There are 7 colour-coded routes with a range of difficulty. Today I did bits of the red and blue routes, an easy 3 Km route
although care is needed on the last part as the path is narrow with a fairly steep slope down at one side.

18 May 2019 Special Trees (Arboles Singulares)
There is a series of special trees around the province of Málaga, special for their size and type.
Mijas Town Hall made a catalogue of those in the Mijas area which is available on the web.
Some in Calahonda are marked with geocaches, so I went looking. As a result I have now produced this page of information
with the photos I took today and links to routes to the other trees in the Mijas area.

9 May 2019 From El Soto to the Capilla de la Virgen del Rocio - Calahonda
We set off from El Soto at 18:30 on this sunny afternoon to find two nearby geocaches.
One is at the Capilla de la Virgen del Rocio in Calahonda and the other at a ruined house and car not far from the Capilla.
the total distance is 6,5 Kms and there are a couple of rather steep slopes but the scenery is fantastic.

5 May 2019 Beautiful scenery starting from the San Pedro-Ronda road near La Zagaleta
There is a hidden place deep in the Palmitera Mountains with ruins from an ancient farmhouse.
This place was one of the first settlements of AI-Andalus in the region.
Among forests of chestnut trees and gall oaks, vines and mul-berries were cultivated to produce wine and silk.
There, terraces and vegetable gardens were irrigated with water from the Guadaiza river.
Over time these lands were claimed by the Christian monarchs.
They were eventually deserted due to frequent disputes and epidemics and in the end they were abandoned.
Today it is home for forest dwellers only, waiting for you to discover it.

26 January 2019 Visit to the spring El Cabañil and the nearby ruins
Down at the bottom of the valley, among the most extensive of the eucalyptus groves of the day,
you will fi nd the Fuente del Cabañil. Actually what you can see is the (unused nowadays) natural pool,
since the water source is hidden amongst the vegetation and protected by a small shed.
Also note, from the same lookout point, the steep slope in the east which is a hill called Loma del Becerril
and the ruins of one of the mining facilities, Las Minas del Jaboncillo.

Geocaches along the Great Málaga Path
There are geocaches hidden every few hundred metres along the Great Málaga Path and the stretch from Ojén to Málaga passes very close to La Mairena.
We went searching for geocaches along a section of the path on 22 January 2018 and here you can see the result.

25 April 2010 Embalse de la Concepción, Istán
Walking in the countryside of Istán to find cache GC1ZCEA (which has not been seen since October 2014 so presumably lost)
La Concepción Reservoir, located on the Río Verde of Istán, is also known as the Río Verde Reservoir.
It supplies some 450,000 inhabitants of the Costa del Sol with drinking water.
It was built in 1971 and began serving water in 1973, and currently belongs to the Andalucian Mediterranean Basin.

21 February 2009 La Ermita de Los Monjes and Fuente de Calaña
Starting in the unlikely location of a housing development behind Marbella bus station, two minutes walking puts you into a forest alongside a stream with many small pools.
The path eventually leads to a ruined building known as La Ermita de Los Monjes and then you can explore further into this beautiful area
until you arrive at the Fuente de Calkaña where I hid a geocache.

25 March 2006 Barranco Blanco, Coín
The Barranco Blanco, hidden in the countryside around Coín, is a delightful area full of the sound of falling ater and birds.
To reach the start of the walk you need to take the MA3303 which runs south from Coín until you reach the point N36.618906° W-4.729726°.
from there you take the road off to the south and follow the route shown here.

5 December 2005 Mina de la Trinidad, Benalmádena
The abandoned ochre mine at Benalmadena and the geocache GCQP6M
If you have a decent torch you can enter the mine and see some of the formations and galleries within, but be careful.
The product of the mine was yellow ochre; a silica and clay mix coloured by iron oxide that has been used as a pigment since prehistoric times.
For those interested there are some samples of quartz crystals and plenty of samples of ochre in the tailings from the mine.

3 March 2005 Climb to Cruz de Juanar in the snow
The Iron Cross of Juanar belonging to the town of Ojén is located in an ideal place to enjoy a beautiful view of Marbella and its entire coast.
According to the legend, sailors placed the cross on the Sierra Blanca many years ago after being saved from a dense fog in the sea.
La Cruz de Juanar is on one of the peaks that shelters Marbella from the interior of the province, providing a stable climate that protects it from the north wind.
The view of the entire Costa del Sol, the Mediterranean and Africa from the top is beautiful.
