Sendero PR-A 278 Juanar - El Pozuelo

Route description

This walk can be done at any time of the year. It is best to do it on a clear day so that you can enjoy the marvellous views.

It is a fairly easy route that runs through several types of countryside, including a small Pinsapo wood.
Along the route you will probably see several specimens of mountain goat.

To access this path, take the A-355 road, from Ojén to Monda.
On this road, in the area known as Los Llanos de Purla, take the MA-469 road, which leads to the Refugio de El Juanar, where you can leave the car in the parking area.

Starting from the refuge, surrounded by pine and chestnut trees, take the lane next to the tennis court.

After a short uphill stretch, you will see on the right the path that starts the route.

The entire initial section is a continuous ascent until you reach the Acebuche pass, where you see a path on the left that leads to Istán Cañada below.

Without taking this path, continue the climb until you enter a cluster of unique fir trees called Pinsapos, the most emblematic species of the Sierra de las Nieves.

After a rest in this unique place, resume the ascent, which allows you to see great views of the Sierra de las Nieves and the Rio Verde Valley.

Finally you arrive at the Puerto del Pozuelo, from where you start to descend.
A little further on is the source of Pozuelo, a spring with permanent water very frequented by animals, including the Ibex (capra hispánica).
In this spring you can renew your supply of fresh water.

From there, the last section leads to the bottom of a ravine that, after crossing it and making a short ascent, leads to the access road to El Juanar, next to a monolith with the inscription Senda de Pepe Lima, in honor of a old forest guard of the area.

From this point, continuing on the road above and after traveling about 500 meters, you reach the starting point, El Refugio de Juanar.
